When it comes to a new roof project, there are a lot of questions that home or business owners might be wondering about. Our team of Tyler roofers at Redline Roofing & Construction has been in the roofing industry for almost two decades, so you can trust that we’ve been asked a lot of questions.
When it comes to your home or business, questions are a great way to understand a process and wrap your head around what to expect from a new roof project. Over the years, we’ve compiled a list, and below are our top three most frequently asked questions and answers to help others navigate a new roof project for their home or business.
Q: What are the material options for my new roof?
A: There are actually quite a lot of material options for roofs out there, so it really depends on the roof, the shape of the home or building, the overall exterior aesthetic design, and the roofing budget. There are options from more cost-effective and popular roofing materials like asphalt shingles and metal roof panels to more expensive copper metal and wood shake styles. You have extremely traditional Spanish tiles made from terra-cotta and even stone tiles.
For commercial roofs that are flat, there are specifically designed vinyl membranes or specially fabricated PVC or TPO rolled materials that are installed using adhesive and seams.
There are many pros and cons to different roofing materials, so we recommend discussing your options in more detail with a contractor or someone like us. We love to talk about roofs and will make sure you have all the details you need to make a good decision.
Q: What are the signs that my existing home or building might need a brand new roof?
A: While a properly installed and maintained roof can last over 20 years or more depending on the material, negligence and/or the natural elements can cause some serious damage to a roof.
Roofs should be cleaned regularly to avoid things like debris, tree limbs, and leaves from building up. Debris on a roof often causes water to flow off incorrectly or even pool. This can lead to mold, rot, and leakage, which is not good for a roof’s integrity.
Roofs are also exposed to the elements 24/7. While they are designed to stand up to things like rain, wind, snow, and sun, extreme bouts of weather put them to the test and can sometimes overwhelm a roof’s structure. Things like hail and larger extreme weather events like tornados, blizzards, and hurricanes can rip off shingles and panels, tear down gutters, cause ice dams, and blow off roofs completely. Storms also cause debris to fly around, and trees can, unfortunately, fall on a roof, rendering it completely ruined.
We recommend a solid roof inspection by a professional service provider at least once a year to ensure everything is secure and working the way it should. This means a roof should be solid underfoot, it should not be leaking, no water should be pooling, and nothing is cracked, broken, or missing from the overall roof structure (including the gutters and drainage system).
After a storm event, we recommend doing a thorough walk around as well, performing immediate clean up and even hiring an inspector directly after to make sure your roof is solid. Any damage to your roof should be assessed so that you can determine its structural state.
Q: How long will it take to install a new roof?
A: In all honesty, the time it takes for a new roof installation involves a few factors:
- Prep needed
- Removal of the old roof
- Materials/supplies available
- Budget for labor
- Where your project fits in the larger queue of your contractor’s schedule (are you the only client or one job of many?)
- The weather
In an ideal situation though, an old roof can be removed and a new roof can be installed within a week or two. This is a great question to dive into deeper with your installation crew or larger construction scope.
